I named that article to refer to the French film « L’auberge espagnole » which deals with the lives of some international students in Barcelona. The aim is to reveal to you some of the little mysteries which took place at my shared house in Frances Road. Yes! We are never far away from France in England.
The first one is about my Guess watch which I forgot one day in the bathroom. Being not able to find it, I first thought having thrown it in my daily disorder. However I’ve never found it and I sorely suspect the cleaning lady because she disappeared without any explanations in the meantime. As I have no proof at all, I will never know the truth.
Like every student house, there are regularl departures and arrivals. Thus, the last week of November, 3 people left. The place was strangely empty. By the way, I grabbed Maxi hypopo, the bolster plush of my Chinese roommate. Nevertheless, one of them was surprising. The English man vanished suddenly. In fact, there were all the facts of a disappearance because he left behind a full cupboard of food, his phone charger in the living-room and a pair of socks in the bathroom. So I use my favourite spy tool during my investigations: facebook. I’ve finally saw some life signs and decided not to contact him on the basis that I don’t have to worry for someone who left without saying goodbye. I learnt one month later from a friend of his that he fails his academic semester. But still, this kind of departure is certainly what we call in France “get away in the English way”. Obviously, this idiom comes from some strong sources.
I didn’t tell you that the house is haunted by a nice Ghost. Indeed, I see time to time a pretty dark haired girl apparition from the chamber number 2. Intrigued, I tried to talk to this polite spirit to only learn that she came from South Korea to study events, but no more. One day, I asked her about her death. However I found out with a terrible shock that she is alive.
One of the most disturbing events is about the anonymous occupants. Indeed, I’ve been surprised to see the chamber 1’s light on through the door for several days, because no one was supposed to live there. The door being locked, we started to wonder what was going on. My new Spanish roommates who arrived 2 weeks before solved the case. They’ve seen two couple of Vietnamese people coming for one night before leaving the place because it didn’t match their expectations. They’ve probably left the light on. Nevertheless, it doesn’t explain how 4 people with luggage haven’t been heard by the 3 others roommates, no one can be so discrete.
The main problem of the old house was about the boiler whose water pressure drops frequently. The plumber came several times without finding the mysterious leak. Therefore I had to push the pressure up by hand until it has finally been sorted. So, being used to the frequent problems with the equipment it’s natural that I called the agency the day I found that no water was coming from the shower, without noticing that the water dispenser was off. Fortunately, I called back before a plumber came.
Another time, a very unpleasant smell came from the kitchen around the fridge. So I cleaned it entirely. But the smell was still there and I was afraid that a dead animal could be somewhere. Despite our research, we found the source of it two days later after moving the bigger fridge. We found out a cat dung behind it. I’m very grateful to the “cute” kitten I found lost inside a few days ago. As I speak about animals, there is a fox who is living near the place, he loves to tan himself on the short roof in the neighbours garden. But we have to be careful about the bin.
One of the strangest events took place on a stormy night where I suddenly heard a big crash in the courtyard. I found the remains of a flower pot. As I’ve never seen any flower pot in our courtyard and any window is overlooking on it, I still don’t know from where it come from.
And the last one, off topic: some of my roommates though that the kettle was a good alternative to heat soup and bouillon.
