Before my roommates moved in, I enjoyed my free time by doing a bit of sightseeing. And it was by chance that I found an English Art Festival with some free theatre plays. It seemed that the royal subjects of her Majesty appreciated the parody plays and other plays with humour… so British, that sometimes I find it a bit inappropriate… but not obviously bad. In order to discover their taste, I went to all the plays I could see in the famous Lower Garden Park of Bournemouth, and in fact I enjoyed some of them (don’t spread the word).
I also discovered during those days the well-known fast food English gastronomy. There are many different kinds: Asian, Mexican, and Pakistani… In France when we talk about fast food we usually think about McDonald and we do well because it could be a big mistake to think otherwise. I tried everything, from Burger King to the sandwiches and salads from the supermarkets and other shops. But the worst is certainly the kebabs. To described them, yes because of my madness I bought two in two different place with the hope that the second one will be better than the first one, none of them have been delivered with the typical kebab bread, the garniture has seemed almost over dated and put without structure in a cardboard box. To add the chicken pieces were simply made of rubber. It wasn’t edible at all. That’s why I say that the English fast hospitality is an excellent diet to lose weight because in my experience you can’t eat more than two bites except for some burger shops, Mcdonalds and Burger King.
But hopefully, all that matter only concerns fast food, and you can find easily a lot of good restaurants in Bournemouth and the Pub’s burger are quite good.
As I’m speaking about food, let’s move on to my first food shopping. It simply took me an eternity to do it since I didn’t know the store, products or brands either and their different packaging. All in English add! For instance, the soups are sold in can of one portion. I often asked the seller where I could find some articles as the mash or the pie dough. I knew very well that my pronunciation was amazing when the seller understood “I want to buy dog” instead of “dough”. So I had to use mime and gesture language.
One terrible thing in UK is that you cannot find more than three different kinds of Haribo sweets in store. Be also careful of the oriental pasta sauces….
Other thing to warn the French people, there aren’t a lot of bakeries around here!!! What a pity!
However, in my mind, the bad English food reputation is quite overstated, mainly by the French!
Indeed, I often find all what I’m looking for to cook a good dish. You won’t tell me that potatoes or other starch and vegetables taste differently because they don’t come from France?
